Mission Statement

The mission of the Commercial Law Association of Australia Ltd is to encourage and develop knowledge and understanding of law usages and practices in Australia and overseas in the legal and commercial community. The Association plays an important role in disseminating information and encouraging debate on important issues.

Since its establishment in 1965 the Association has continued to provide networking and educational opportunities for those involved in legal and business sectors.


Objectives

  • to foster and encourage the pursuit and dissemination of knowledge of commercial and corporate law usages and practices;
  • to enable and encourage members of the commercial and corporate community and the legal profession to examine and consider jointly commercial law usages and practices;
  • to gather, examine, consider and disseminate information concerning new legislation proposed or enacted by the Parliaments of Australia or overseas relating to commercial or corporate law usages and practices;
  • to assist Australian trade and commerce and in particular, international trade and transactions, by encouraging the commercial and corporate community and the legal profession to examine and consider jointly commercial and corporate law usages and practices;
  • to acquire and disseminate knowledge of international and comparative law in relation to commercial and corporate law, usages and practices;
  • to encourage and develop in the legal profession and the commercial and corporate community a knowledge and understanding of commercial and corporate law usages and practices in Australia and overseas;
  • to disseminate amongst the commercial community and the legal profession by means of seminars, discussions, lectures, publications and the like knowledge of commercial and corporate law usages and practices both local and foreign;
  • to consider and make representations on the reform of the law relating to or affecting commercial and corporate transactions;
  • to encourage and assist in the promotion of an efficient system of arbitration of disputes;
  • to examine means of improving the procedures for their efficient disposal; to establish libraries or other forms of access, including electronic access, to commercial and corporate publications and other information;
  • to encourage the use of Australian or international standard forms of commercial and corporate documents in relation to Australian trade and commerce;
  • to publish and distribute, in any manner whatsoever, standard forms of commercial and corporate documents;
  • to publish and distribute, in any manner whatsoever, journals, books and papers;
  • to acquire and make available for the use of members information concerning foreign commercial and corporate law and practice;
  • to promote social intercourse amongst members of the Company and persons interested in the objects of the Company; and
  • to co-operate and correspond with other bodies having objects similar to the objects of the Company.
